When I was injured last year, I learned a valuable lesson in being a runner. Giving is as important, if not more therapeutic than running itself. Ok, I'm pushing a bit here as I do remember my first pain free run after 6 long months of constant pain. I was crying and laughing at the same time. Yes, it was THAT powerful. But I digress...
So while I was sidelined, I discovered the power of helping others. I became a running nanny for my friends, I was the person who was driving them to races, picking up race kits, holding sweaters, offering water, taking the ever important picture at the finish line. I was the ear they needed when they wanted to dissect the race, the voice of reason when they needed guidance and the reminder to eat/hydrate well before a race or a practice run.
I also cheered for my friends, nothing is better than seeing a familiar face in the crowd, it gives you wings! So when many people in the running community decided to run the upcoming Road2Hope Marathon in Hamilton, I waffled as to run it but cooler heads prevailed and I decided to cheer instead.
So I will be there, on Sunday morning with my mitts, my cowbell, my camera and my best voice to cheer them coming through the finish line. It feels good to do it.
I can't wait!
